Biography
Chacham Ezra Attia was the Rosh Yeshiva of Porat Yosef Yeshiva in Jerusalem and one of the formative figures of Sephardic Haredi Judaism in the Land of Israel. He was born in Aleppo (Aram Tzova), Syria, to Leah and Rabbi Yitzchak Attia, both from rabbinic families in the Aleppo community. His mother, who had struggled for many years to bear children, vowed at the synagogue of Ezra the Scribe in the city of Tadef that if she were blessed with a son she would name him Ezra and dedicate his life to Torah. In his childhood he studied in Aleppo under Rabbi Yehuda (Atzlan) Attia and Rabbi Shaul Matlov Abadi, and at a young age his teachers already destined him for greatness. At age 16 his family immigrated to the Land of Israel, and despite dire economic circumstances he was not sent to work, due to his mother's vow to dedicate him to Torah. In 1907 he began studying at Yeshivat Ohel Moed (later Porat Yosef), where he was considered a prodigy and became known for his diligence. In 1925, following the passing of the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Raphael Shlomo Laniado, he was appointed head of Porat Yosef Yeshiva, a position he held for 45 years until his passing. There he produced many disciples, many of whom became communal leaders in Israel and abroad. His most famous students include Rabbis Ovadia Yosef, Ben Zion Abba Shaul, Mordechai Eliyahu, Chaim David Halevi, and Yehuda Tzedaka. Rabbi Attia was known for his extraordinary diligence in Torah study, his modesty, and his devotion to his students, and he became a source of inspiration for generations of learners.
